What I recommend based on my experience:

After setting up websites online for more than 14 years, I’ve used free hosting services only for the time I didn’t have the choice. The credit cards my country was offering were limited to local (non-online) payments.

The first time I was able to make purchases online, cheap hosting services were among the first things I invested in.

At the time, after using the available free hosting services for around 4 years, buying peace of mind for 1$ per month (or less) was well worth the investment.

Because even with the best free hosting, the security remains very low, your work can get hacked or disappears the next day and you can’t do anything.

For that, I recommend you to get a cheap hosting service because :

  • The little 0.99$ price difference will make a big difference, especially in terms of reliability.

And you can use free hosting services only if:

  • You don’t have a choice.
  • You just want to get familiar with the hosting management tools.
  • You are just practicing web development or web design.
  • You run a test website, and getting it disappearing overnight is not a problem for you.

Group buying means involving another buyer to cut costs in half is another solution if you are patient and your files’ privacy is not important for you.

For example, you can ask on forums, on social media, or leave a comment below this article asking if someone is interested.

InfinityFree is a free web hosting service that offered a host for over 350,000 people, starting in 2012 under the name of Grendel Hosting, then moving everything under InfinityFree in 2016.

Is there any misleading with InfinityFree?

Even though InfinityFree says that it offers “unlimited disk space and bandwidth”, your account is limited to 30,000 files and 50,000 daily hits.

Read my InfinityFree’s detailed review.

Best for ease of use

Important Features and Specifications

  • Website builder: Yes (Zyro)
  • Applications installer: No
  • Ads: Yes (a little “Powerd by 000webhost” banner at the bottom of your website)
  • Website: 1
  • Control panel: custom
  • Bandwidth: 3GB
  • Disk space: 300MB (limited to 10000 files)
  • SSL certificate: No
  • Subdomains: Yes

  • Uptime: % (based on my first 30 days)

000webhost (which is powered by Hostinger) started providing free web hosting in 2007, and it becomes amongst the first results on Google if you search “free web hosting”.

Back in 2015, 000webhost got hacked and leaked the credentials of an estimated 13.5 million user accounts.

What is the catch with 000webhost’s offer?

  • The first misleading is that your monthly 3GB of bandwidth is restricted with 500 requests per minute.
  • The 300 MB of disk space is limited to 10000 files.

Best for support

Important Features and Specifications

The specifications you get in your control panel are more than what is advertised on their signup page, the ones you get are :

  • Websites: Unlimited addon domains, subdomains, and parked domains
  • Applications Installer: Yes
  • Control panel: VistaPanel
  • Ads: Ad-free
  • Website Builder: SiteBuilder (unreachable during my test)
  • Support: video tutorials, forum, and fast-to-reply ticket-based support
  • Bandwidth: Unlimited (50,000 hits)
  • Disk space: Unlimited (30019 inodes)
  • Email account: No longer supported
  • SSL certificate: Self-signed SSL certificate only
  • Databases: Unlimited (MySQL)
  • Uptime: % (based on my first 30 days)

This is one of the free hosts I remember using back in the late 2000s.

I’ve tried ByetHost again to give you my up-to-date opinion.

When I tried to create my own test website, the registration process was quick and simple.

What is misleading with ByetHost?

  • Even they offer a generous or “unlimited” disk space, you are limited to only 30000 files.
  • For bandwidth, even though you see “unlimited”, it’s only 50,000 hits. This means if one visitor accessed one page of your website, and this page opens 3 files (CSS, photo, script), that means 3 hits per this visit.

Free Hosting No Ads

Best for support

Important Features and Specifications

  • Websites: 1 domain / 3 subdomains
  • Applications Installer: Yes, but limited to WordPress, Joomla, and Grav
  • Control panel: Advanced Control Panel
  • Ads: Ad-free
  • Website Builder: Yes
  • Support: fast ticket-based support and FAQ
  • Bandwidth: 5GB
  • Disk space: 1GB
  • Email account: 1
  • SSL certificate: No
  • Databases: 1 MySQL (30 MB size)
  • Uptime: % (based on my first 30 days)

This is what I call an average free hosting, there is nothing special about it.

The sign-up process was easy but not short.

The control panel disturbed me at the first glance due to presenting all necessary and necessary things at once.

What is the catch with FreeHostingNoAds’s offer?

If you are planning on testing this free host then upgrade to the $0.50/mo paid plan, this price is valid for new sign-ups only for the first year.

Even though the Cron Jobs feature is accessible, it still requires upgrading your account.

Best for his email account feature

Important Features and Specifications

  • Websites: 1 domain (and 3 subdomains)
  • Applications Installer: Yes (limited to WordPress, Joomla, and GRAV)
  • Control panel: custom control panel
  • Ads: 100% ad-free
  • Website Builder: Zacky
  • Support: responsive ticket-based support and written articles
  • Bandwidth: 5GB
  • Disk space: 1GB
  • Email account: 1
  • SSL certificate: No
  • Database: 1 MySQL
  • Uptime: % (based on my first 30 days)

To my knowledge, since 2004 when Awardspace started offering free web hosting, there is no data breach or anything else I should warn you about.

The signup process was easy and quick to complete, but once I’ve seen the control panel I found it very disturbing at the first glance, but I manage to found a little solution.

What is the catch with Awardspace’s offer?

Because I found on the internet someone saying that AwardSpace uses some legal jargon in their ToS that lets them sell your data, I’ve checked that myself, and they state “We will NEVER sell your personal data”. So, I can’t say anything.

Free Hosting EU

Free hosting with easy-to-violate terms

Important Features and Specifications

  • Websites: 1 domain name / 5 subdomains
  • Applications Installer: Yes
  • Control panel: Advanced Control Panel
  • Ads: ad-free hosting
  • Website Builder: Yes
  • Support: fast ticket-based support and FAQ
  • Bandwidth: 4 GB
  • Disk space: 200 MB
  • Email account: 1
  • SSL certificate: No
  • Databases: 1 MySQL
  • Uptime: % (based on my first 30 days)

The account creation process was not the simplest. More than that the control panel was disturbing for me at the first glance, fortunately, I found a little solution to organize it.

The app’s auto-installer was available but only for WordPress, Joomla, and GRAV. Fortunately, my WordPress installation process took only 58 seconds to complete.

What is the catch with FreeHostingEu’s offer?

Unfortunately, the Terms of Services says that you are not allowed to allocate more than 10% of your free hosting account space to some files (like .jpg, .gif, .png, .pdf) or any identical file types.

This restriction means you can easily violate their terms (without paying attention) and your account can be determined at any time.

Free Web Hosting Area

My not recommended free host without a doubt

Important Features and Specifications

  • Websites: 1 domain and 1 free subdomain
  • Applications Installer: No
  • Control panel: custom
  • Ads: no ads for new sites
  • Website Builder: No
  • Support: not tested
  • Bandwidth: Unmetered
  • Disk space: 1.5 GB
  • Email account: 0
  • SSL certificate: Yes
  • Databases: 1 MySQL
  • Uptime: % (based on my first 30 days)

Being available from 2005 (this is true, I’ve known them in this era), this is something that makes you feel they will not disappear overnight, but it was not the case (see below to know why).

The sign-up process was easy and quick. More than that, my newly created subdomain was instantly accessible.

Unfortunately, the control panel was very limited in the available tools.

What is the catch with FreeWebHostingArea’s offer?

The first catch I found is that they suspend accounts to get the penalty fee.

For non-active websites, according to their terms of use, it is easy to get it deleted because they require your website to have at least 1 visit each month.

Another thing that the terms of service show are that your website should have quality content.

The “Unmetered bandwidth” that offer on their features list does not mean unlimited bandwidth.

Risks With Free Hosting Platforms

  • Getting your website down or disappeared overnight

One of the reasons that I do not recommend using free hostings is that the terms of service of the majority allow them to easily delete your website without prior notice.

The second risk is that since you are not paying them, free web hosting companies do not feel obligated to let you know when they will go out of business.

  • Poor Website Performances

Because free hosting companies make little money from this service, they tend to stuff hundreds if not thousands of websites on the same server, which results in lowering the performance of your websites, like uptime and speed.

The everyday 1-hour sleep period that 000WebHost enforces is what makes you think of upgrading to their paid service and at the same time, a solution host more sites per server compared to competitors without lowering performance.

  • Getting hacked

Why a company will invest in up-to-date and advanced security technology if the service is free?

The majority work using only normal security features and this is what results in data breaches, like what happened with 000Webhost in 2015 that leaked emails and passwords of million users.

  • Affecting your SEO

SEO (Search Engin Optimization) is what helps you get to the first places in Google search results.

Using a free web hosting service that tends to get out of service every week, have always slow speeds and generally does not offer an SSL certificate are definitely will affect your rankings on Google, which means fewer free visitors from Google.

FAQs about Free Web Hosting

  • What is uptime?

It’s the time when your website is accessible online. i

  • What is the difference between virtual and shared web hosting?

They mean the same thing, which is multiple websites sharing the same server.

  • What is the monthly bandwidth?

It’s the data size that your visitor uses to view your website content.

For example, if your host gives you 1 GB bandwidth and your website host 1 GB video, if 1 visitor watches the entirety of this video, your website will get offline until the next month

  • What is the difference between a free host and a paid one?
Besides the cost, the differences are in security, performance, and functionalities.
  • What are the best free web hosting sites?

There isn’t something called “the best”, because the best for me may not be the best for others, this is why you should determine what you need first then read and compare between the services to get “your best” free host.

  • Is there any free host that comes with a free domain name?

I don’t know of any free host service that gives a free .com domain, but the majority lets you connect your .com domain with them.

If you don’t have or want to use a .com domain, you can still get (with some free host) what are called a subdomain, that let you access your website with a web address that looks like “yourwebsite.freehosting.com”.
