Canon EOS 200D Camera Review : The ball and the Dual Pixel AF go so well

  • Intuitive and educational interface.
  • Multitouch and swivel screen.
  • Excellent general reactivity.
  • AF tracking very efficient (in picture as in video).
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC.
  • Quiet focus.

  • Strong red dominance of the images.
  • Autofocus lacking sensitivity and precision.
  • Only 9 collimators.
  • No video settings.
  • Less compact than an EOS 100D.
  • Colors available … questionable.

From the EOS 100D, the EOS 200D does not keep much, not even the design, which we can only regret. Fortunately, it compensates for all the other points: more user-friendly menus, a “new” standard zoom full of good will, a well-born Dual Pixel AF sensor, a very pertinent subject tracking … What to come cannibalize from the bottom an EOS 800D that already lives in the shadow of the EOS 77D . Compared to the direct competition at Nikon and Pentax, it is mainly his pedagogy that will seduce. If you want to start in SLR, this is a great choice … although it will be easy to find synonymous with the hybrid side, Panasonic Lumix GX80 and Olympus OM-D E-M10 II leading.

Goodbye Canon EOS 100D, small reflex generous by its benefits but very small (and cute). Launched in 2013, you’ve done your time. Place to the novelty, the last one, here is your replacement: the Canon EOS 200D. Finished the Lilliputian format; the EOS 200D is a reflex, admittedly small, but resembling any other SLR, in barely more compact. However, it is for the good cause: both inside and out, everything has been changed. What attract amateurs in search of a reflex as formidable as affordable?

24.2MP DualPixel AF CMOS sensor, Digic 7 processor, 7.7cm diagonal swivel screen, 1,040,000 dots and multitouch , maximum sensitivity of 25,600 ISO, Full HD video in 50p, choice between menus classics and the new simplified (and pedagogical) menus: no, you did not go wrong, it is not the EOS 800D released in spring 2017, but the EOS 200D, EOS 100D . A sacred upgrade for this amateur “entry level” reflex … but ultimately not that much.

Let’s say it right away: from outside, we do not like the EOS 200D that we have had in test. First because its design loses the exotic charm of its predecessor, cute with its small handle and its ridiculous template, but mainly because once again, we wonder what magic stingray Canon to propose silver and beige boxes (you can say “cognac”, it seems that it is more class). Not that this association is unpleasant in the absolute, especially when applied to retro-look cases whose exterior has a pronounced metallic appearance, but there … frankly … this matte gray and sand plasticuir wet … it’s not a success. This negative impression is reinforced by the relative lightness to the grip, which essentially comes from the fact that the EOS 200D, although it weighs only one gram less than the EOS 100D, is less dense. Pity ; we would have preferred the black version and would have been even more cruel with the white version. In short, let’s leave aside the tastes and colors and our considerations of spoiled children to really interest us in the case.

Tonight I will be as cheap to go dancing, danseeeer …

If the EOS 200D loses the main argument of its elder (which was therefore its size, you will have understood it), it tries to distinguish itself from the other reflexes of the constructor by a ergonomic approach a little different. The general spirit is there and a canonist will not be lost. As for a newcomer to the brand, he will find himself quickly, which is probably the most important given the positioning of the case. Nevertheless some choices leave doubtful. In particular the new touch of the buttons, which is not of the best effect and leaves a mixed impression: the sensation that the chosen material is soft and a little sticky, when in reality it is not the case. Bizarre. The On / Off / Video mode switch also disrupts at first glance, despite a firm latch that should a priori avoid  activate the video mode by accident when switching on. The first impression is important, it is said; there we are far from the thunderbolt at the first manipulation.

Fortunately, after having manipulated for some time this “small” case, he eventually reveal its many qualities. It would have been a pity to deprive ourselves of it!

The EOS 200D has not forgotten the microphone and remote control. Good ! Note that next to the flash, there is a key for accessing the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings. The NFC is also part of the game.

If the touch screen is not a novelty for the red brand at this level of range, the mobility on ball joint is more than welcome and considerably expands the photographic possibilities, both in terms of framing and practicality, in photo as in video. The menus are always as clear, it is possible to navigate with the fingertip and – it is really our ergonomic favorite of the year all brands combined – the menus simplified are really very educational and pleasant to use. We can only congratulate Canon on being one of the few, if not the only, builders to bring so much care to accompany his new clients and aspiring photographers in their learning, patiently demystifying such esoteric tuning, such submenu at first sight abstruse. Just for that, the 200D deserves to be recommended to all beginners, especially the youngest having learned the photograph on the smartphone.

In Liveview, only the simplified menu is available. And that’s great!

So, we are ready to forgive her dress not necessarily flattering, its optical viewfinder nevertheless a little narrow, the impossibility to select the collimator on the touch screen when using the viewfinder – absolution all the more easy that its battery of 1,040 mAh easily authorizes the 600 views, helped in this by the fact that in Liveview, the screen cuts off after about ten seconds if you do nothing, which avoids pumping unnecessarily energy. Finally, we like it, this EOS 200D … But what is it in the belly?

It’s less its new AF module with 9 poor collimators than the trio DualPixel AF + Digic 7 + STM processor that allow the EOS 200D to get the maximum rating in reactivity. With an exemplary regularity, it enjoys a more homogeneous behavior than the EOS 800D and even allows itself to be nicked when the light weakens. More constant than a Nikon D3400 but ahead of a D5600 , it leaves its two yellow competitors far behind as soon as one opts for the sight on the screen. That is very valuable! On the side of the burst, on the other hand, it enters the ranks and concedes a slight advance to the EOS 800D, since it content with a cadence of 4.7 images per second (on 55 views) in JPEG and 5 , 5 i / s in RAW, of course, but only on 5 consecutive views.

Same sensor, same processor, same lens (the 18-55 mm f / 4-5,6 IS STM transtandard zoom): it is no surprise that the EOS 200D sticks to the benefits of the EOS 800D in its rise in sensitivity , with images up to 3200 ISO. However, the comparison stops there. Indeed, the autofocus module is less precise and the EOS 200D will often find it more difficult to correctly take stock. This weakness is all the more glaring when the light fades.More serious still to our eyes: the white balance. From a few boxes, Canon offers two modes of automatic white balance, one with priority to white (AWB W), the other with priority to the environment (AWB). The first reduces the intensity of warm colors in an image, the second increases it. The difference is obvious, as you can see below, but in any case, even when photographing a perfectly white object, it appears slightly red. Shooting in RAW is therefore more than ever recommended, unless a firmware update corrects this (we tested the device with version 1.0).

White balance with white priority generates a much more red image than the white balance with priority to the environment … which already causes a red dominance.

Normally, the EOS 200D should have been satisfied with 3 stars in video. Yes, it shoots in Full HD 50p, but nowadays, this is nothing extraordinary. Yes, it has a microphone jack, but here again, not to disturb the hierarchy. The picture quality is just right, with colors slightly too saturated compensated by fair exposure. The sound is sufficient, but nevertheless presents a gentle breath which will be heard in the calm ambiences. There are strictly no adjustments possible when shooting: impossible to choose the sensitivity, the speed, the opening, we must rely on the beast. And, precisely, you can trust him.The continuous autofocus is dreadful (provided your subject does not jump like a marsupilami in front of the camera). He is helped in this by a zoom as silent as unctuous in its transitions. The touch screen offers great ease of use, especially to select the focus area, and the spherical screen is an undeniable contribution … even if when you turn to when you’re shooting it switches to “mirror” mode (the left is right and vice versa), which can disturb at first. In short, the EOS 200D is a good little SLR to start your YouTube channel or vlogs without making your life any easier.
