In order for me to save you time, I’ve used both ExpressVPN and GhostVPN and in this review, I will share with you my unbiased option.

ExpressVPN vs GhostVPN: Which One Offers Greater Value for Your Money?

ExpressVPN GhostVPN
Monthly $12.95 $9.99
Quarterly None $19.99 ($6.66/month)
Semi-annually $59.95 ($9.99/month) $29.99 ($4.99/month)
Annually $99.95 ($8.32/month) $59.99 ($4.99/month)
Money-back guarantee 30-days 30-days

As we conclude from the above table, GhostVPN is more affordable than ExpressVPN. So, if your deciding is based only on price, the best deal for you is to opt for GhostVPN for 6 months (no the annual subscription, because there no decrease in the price per month).

SPEED : ExpressVPN Is Faster Than GhostVPN

This point is among the easiest to compare because the difference is so clear.

In order for me to lower the most possible factors that can affect my results, I’ve conducted both speed tests on the same Macbook (macOS High Sierra), using the same router at the same hour, without any modification to the settings.

What I found is that ExpressVPN is much faster than its competitor GhostVPN,

Both services allowed me to watch Netflix US without any buffering or lag, but do not forget that I use fiber-optic internet, so if you have slower internet and you want to minimize the decrease of speed using a VPN I recommend you ExpressVPN.

Security – ExpressVPN is more secure?

Both services have a top-notch encryption protocol (AES-256-GCM).

Encryption is what makes your information harder for hackers to decode. AES-256-GCM is the encryption used by banks and the government, so at this point, you are safe using both services.

The encryption protocol is what determines how your information is coded as it is transmitted over the internet.

ExpressVPN settings

For ExpressVPN, you have multiple ones like Lightway UDP, OpenVPN UDP/TCPIKEv2, and L2TP/IPSec (lower security), and the appropriate one is automatically picked at the start of your VPN (depending on your internet at the time).

For GhostVPN, I didn’t found where to change the protocol.

Automatic Kill Switch is what prevents exposing your real information to your ISP when you lost connection unexpectedly.

For ExpressVPN, this feature is available on apps for Mac, Windows, Linux, Android, and router app.

For GhostVPN, I don’t know if by this enabled option do I have the automatic Kill Switch enabled.

A leak test is a test we do to make sure that your real identity is always kept private while you are connected to a VPN server.

Both VPNs have passed this test.

Privacy: ExpressVPN is Safer at this point

ExpressVPN company is based in the British Virgin Islands, which is a privacy-friendly location because it’s outside of the Fourteen Eyes countries.

But it still remains a British overseas territory, (the UK is one of the Five-Eyes countries), so it can still put pressure if they want something from ExpressVPN.

But don’t worry about that, because ExpressVPN uses a technology (TrustedServer) that doesn’t store any information on their servers hard-drives, so, originally, there is no information that can be shared.

The event that happened in 2017 with the Turkish authorities confirmed this because they did not find any stored information when they tried to retrieve it from one of the ExpressVPN servers.

On the other side, the company that owns GhostVPN (VPNetworks LLC), are located in the USA, which is one of the Five-Eyes countries, so it’s easy for them to get any date stored by GhostVPN.

The majority of VPN services claim that they keep no-logs, but it still a marketing talk that requires in-depth research.

ExpressVPN privacy policy

ExpressVPN divides logs into “activity logs” and “connection logs” and they are both not seen or stored.

ExpressVPN collects minimal information about usage.

GhostVPN privacy policy

Same thing with GhostVPN, so it’s a tie in this point.

Does It Work in China? ExpressVPN Can Bypass China Online Censorship

In order for me to stay transparent, I should start this section by stating that I didn’t use any service fron the inside of China, so all of this informations are based on my research and not from my experience.

From my researches, ExpressVPN can bypass The Great Firewall of China. For GhostVPN, I didn’t found this information.

The only thing that you should make sure to do is to install ExpressVPN before arriving in China.

But if you found yourself already in, you can still download it using the Tor browser. Their .onion address is http://expressobutiolem.onion).

ExpressVPN vs GhostVPN: Which is better for Netflix?

Using my fiber-optic internet, both ExpressVPN and GhostVPN allowed me to unlock and watch Netflix US easily and without any buffering or lag. But if you have slower internet, I recommend you using ExpressVPN because he has a very low decrease in download speed during tests.

ExpressVPN is far better for torrenting?

ExpressVPN torrenting test
ExpressVPN torrenting: from 11 mb to just 9.2 mb in down. speed

GhostVPN torrenting: from 10.9 mb to 3 mb in down. speed

From the results above, ExpressVPN is what I recommend for torrenting.

Servers: ExpressVPN offers the widest server network

ExpressVPN offers 3,000+ VPN servers that are utilized for the 160 VPN server locations in 94 countries. On the other hand, GhostVPN claims at the website homepage that they offer 3000 VPN servers in 50 countries.

GhostVPN servers

But after I’ve installed the GhostVPN software, I only found 45 countries to choose from.

What about gaming?  ExpressVPN is the winner

Gaming is based on ping number, the lower this number, the better your gaming experience will be.

ExpressVPN Ping: 45
ExpressVPN Ping: 45
ExpressVPN Ping: 44
ExpressVPN Ping: 44

As you state from the photos above, both have a very good ping after connecting myself to servers in the same not far away country (France).

ExpressVPN vs GhostVPN: Which has better support?

As I’m writing the ExpressVPN review and this comparison, I’ve contacted several times the ExpressVPN support and their response time was fast (in one case, very fast),  this made me feel there are always someone from the team of ExpressVPN by my side if I need help.

In the case of GhostVPN, I’ve opened a ticket two days ago and I still didn’t receive any response about it.

Other than this, ExpressVPN offers more available outlets, they offer support in a written format like troubleshooting articles and how o guides, and also in an easy to watch videos, they have also a ticket system and email address that you can use to contact them.

Payment options and Refund

The payment options available to pay for GhostVPN are Paypal, Credit Cards, and BitCoin.

On the other hand, ExpressVPN offers the same payment options plus other ones like AliPay, Mint, WebMoney,…

For a refund, ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, GhostVPN offers only 7 days.

I’ve tested asking a refund with GhostVPN, I still didn’t hear from them after two days. If I did the same thing with ExpressVPN, I’m sure they will forward it to the billing department directly.

ExpressVPN beats GhostVPN at refund.

App differences – ExpressVPN Has More Features on It Apps

One of the features that I have on ExpressVPN and I don’t found on GhostVPN is the Split Tunneling feature.

If you don’t know what this means, Split tunneling is what allows you to choose which app will stay using your regular internet connection while your VPN is connected.

For example, if you are from the UK and you are watching your geo-blocked film on Netflix US and at the same time you want to enter BBC iPlayer (which is not accessible from the US), you can do that with ExpressVPN.

Both services don’t have this wanted feature.

The winner is …

It’s easy for me to found that ExpressVPN is the winner, because when we search for a VPN, security, privacy, and speed is the most important thing we are looking for, and at the majority of this points (if not all) ExpressVPN is the winner.
